There is a veritable cornucopia of new comics hitting stands each week. While readers often know exactly what it is they’re most interested in (those in the know have got their pull-list sitting in their comic shop’s ever-reliable hands), there is something to be said about going against that old truism and Judging a Book by Its Cover.
Some truly astounding cover art hits each and every week, and these are the ones that caught Colin’s eye the week of June 18th, 2025.
Aliens vs Avengers #4

The Alien franchise is, at its best, an isolating one. In those stories, fans feel the most afraid when the protagonists are overwhelmed, alone, in the dark. All of this is evident in this Spider-Man cover: his little glowstick, the writhing mass of the xenomorphs. It’s horrifying.

Big bat, little bird. This cover seems to illustrate the looming nature of Batman on the psyches of his rogues — and Penguin’s little ‘tap tap tap tap’ sound effects are also delightful.
DuckTales #5
Variant by Carlo Lauro
Magica de Spell is one of the DuckTales all-stars. We love a good Magica story; we also love beautiful negative space artwork. I love that her magically-transformed bird-brother, Poe, matches her shoes. That’s masterful fashion right there.
GI Joe #8

Part of a set of connecting covers to celebrate the Energon Universe’s second anniversary, this GI Joe cover seems like heroic center: Optimus and Duke center stage. These covers are so jam-packed with characters that it becomes a fun game to quiz yourself on who’s who.
Godzilla vs Avengers #1

The ‘Bout of the Century’ wheatpaste flyer is a design aesthetic that I’m surprised doesn’t get utilized more in a medium intent on setting its major players against one another over and over. In this case, it’s a tiny man and a giant lizard, which clearly marks the underdog in the match. Great, eye-popping colors, fantastic renderings of the characters.
Krypto: The Last Dog of Krypton #1
Cover by Jae Lee
Utilizing Jae Lee to illustrate a heart-warming, cuddly-forward book is an interesting choice. The otherworldly, heavily-inked master manages the task, of course, but Lee is not synonymous in my mind with puppies and babies. I love the sorts of “oh no, not again” baby hijinks this cover suggests, as if little Kal-El is essentially Baby Herman in that Roger Rabbit short.

Cover by Caroline Cash
This cover accurately represents the living spaces of my past — and, presumably, the living spaces of thousands of 20-something creatives right now — and that is, at its heart, journalism. Caroline Cash is reporting from the frontlines of creative youth culture. It’s great.
Zatanna #5
Variant by Zoe Thorogood
Thorogood is so fantastic. This is a perfect pin-up of the classic Zatanna aesthetic: costumed and surrounded by magic trick aesthetic. You half-expect some dusty old vaudeville orchestra pit music to kick up.
