Tomorrow evening, local author Kyra Davis Lurie will be launching her new book, “The Great Man,” a poignant retelling of The Great Gatsby, set amongst L.A.’s Black elite. A young veteran finds his way post-war, pulled into a new world of tantalizing possibilities—and explosive tensions.
In the spirit of Juneenth, Chevalier’s invites readers to this celebratory launch and an opportunity to browse their collection of books from some of the world’s best African-American writers.
Kyra Davis Lurie is a New York Times bestselling author and screenwriter. Her work includes “Just One Night” and “The Sophie Katz” mysteries. Her books have been published in nine languages across 6 continents. This is her first historical fiction novel. Kyra lives in Los Angeles with her husband, where they both serve as advisors to their utterly perfect dog, Potus.
Purchasing your book through Chevalier’s will also help to support the Altadena Community Preservation, as “we will be donating 15% of the full proceeds made during the event towards this amazing cause which is dedicated towards the rebuilding of one of the United State’s most prominent and historic black communities,” staff told the Buzz.

Chevalier’s Books Summer Camp Starts July 9
Larchmont’s beloved bookstore, Chevalier’s Books, is launching its very first Summer Camp starting July 9. Sessions are Wednesdays and Thursdays from 12 – 3 pm through July 31st. Designed for kids ages 8-12, with flexible options for parents. Sign your lucky camper up for one, a pair, or ALL of their fun summer camp activities, sure to let their creativity shine and inspire their love of reading!
Camp is open to kids ages 8-12. The hours are 12pm-3pm. There will be a certified child CPR expert on hand at all times. All campers that sign up will receive a free goodie bag of exclusive book and Chevalier’s merchandise, plus a Summer Book Bingo card to help promote diverse reading all summer long!
