Lawmaker proposes constitutional amendment for Trump to serve third term

A proposal was introduced by one of President Donald Trump’s top allies in Congress on Thursday evening, suggesting the possibility of a third term for the president.

Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., is advocating for a constitutional amendment that would allow a president to serve three terms in office, with a limit of two consecutive four-year terms.

The proposed amendment states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

The 22nd Amendment, which was ratified in 1951, currently prohibits anyone from serving as president for more than two terms.

This amendment was introduced by Congress in 1947 following Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s four-term presidency. Roosevelt passed away shortly after entering his fourth term in the 1944 presidential election.

In a statement released to the media on Thursday, Ogles expressed his belief that Trump is uniquely suited to lead the nation and should be allowed the opportunity to continue his work.

“In light of this, I am proposing a constitutional amendment to modify the restrictions imposed by the 22nd Amendment on presidential terms,” Ogles stated. “This amendment would enable President Trump to serve three terms, guaranteeing that we can maintain the strong leadership our country greatly needs.”

Although Trump jokingly mentioned serving a third term in a private speech to House Republicans late last year, sources present at the event confirmed to Fox News Digital that it was not a serious proposal.

Just recently, Ogles revealed a bill that would allow Trump to explore the purchase of Greenland after the president expressed interest in such a deal.

The “Make Greenland Great Again Act” would have authorized Trump to engage in negotiations with Denmark for the purchase of Greenland, a territory geographically located in North America but historically tied to Europe.

“Joe Biden tarnished our reputation over the past four years, and even before taking office, President Trump is signaling a return to ‘America First.’ American economic and security interests will now take precedence, and House Republicans are prepared to support President Trump in delivering for the American people,” Ogles stated in an interview with Fox News Digital at the time.
