TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The American Pyrotechnics Association is warning of possible higher prices for fireworks this year, because of tariffs.
According to the APA, 99% of consumer fireworks in America as produced by China, but not all fireworks businesses are experiencing a major jump in prices.
At Miller Fireworks Company, they pride themselves on having whatever you desire in stock.
“It’s been ramping up especially in the past couple days as we get closer to the fourth, it will get busier,” Jason Jahns, a salesman said .
While some people may be concerned about price increases due to a tariff war with China, Miller Fireworks said they’ve avoided the bulk of the additional cost.
“We were able to be ahead of the game, and we did get some of our product ordered before the tariffs were enforced,” Jahns said.
The early action by Miller to stockpile some fireworks helped, but not all the tariffs were avoidable.
“Some of them did hit us, we did take some across the board but, it only raised a couple of our items,” Jahns said. “the majority of our stuff stayed the same price so we’re still able to give you the deal.”
While Miller Fireworks is in position to apply good prices this year, the is warning against sustained tariffs that could impact the many small businesses that make up the American fireworks industry.
Issuing an alert of higher prices, and supply chain challenges.
“Family business is where it is, we’re here for our community,” Jahns said.
Meanwhile the hope for Miller Fireworks Company, a 70 plus year Northwest Ohio staple, is to continue to be able to supply fireworks for some of America’s biggest celebrations.
“We want to stay ahead of the game, as I said that way we’re able to continue the prices that we have for the consumers,” he said.
APA said it is, “seeking a sector-specific exemption or reduced tariff level to allow fireworks importers to maintain operations during a challenging economic period.”
The organization added, “And recognition that this request is not political, but rooted in the economic reality facing seasonal, safety-regulated small businesses.”
Miller Fireworks is open seven days a week at various locations.
