MMA Promotion Raises Weight Class Limits for Divisions

Each day brings forth new and intriguing details about the Global Fight League (GFL). Recently, the league’s official X account shared its weight class information with increased weight limits.

Here are the weight limits for all the divisions in the GFL:

• Women’s Atomweight – 110 pounds
• Women’s Strawweight – 125 pounds
• Women’s Bantamweight – 140 pounds
• Men’s Bantamweight – 145 pounds
• Men’s Featherweight – 155 pounds
• Men’s Lightweight – 165 pounds
• Men’s Welterweight – 180 pounds
• Men’s Middleweight – 200 pounds
• Men’s Light Heavyweight – 225 pounds
• Men’s Heavyweight – 265 pounds

According to the announcement, the reason for the differing weight-class limits from the UFC is to discourage “extreme weight-cutting by raising weight class limits, thereby ensuring athletes maintain optimal health and peak performance while reducing injuries. This approach aids fighters in staying healthy and better equipped to deliver exciting performances for fans.”

This initiative appears particularly beneficial in divisions such as women’s bantamweight, men’s lightweight, men’s middleweight, and men’s light heavyweight, where there are either significant gaps between divisions in the UFC or, as seen in the case of the women’s bantamweight division, no higher weight class to accommodate them.

As the GFL action heats up, the league’s inaugural draft scheduled for January 24 will soon set the tone for this team-based promotion.
