Musk seeks dismissal of lawsuit regarding Tesla’s reported use of AI-generated ‘Blade Runner’ visuals

Elon Musk’s attorneys plan to request the dismissal of a case accusing the Tesla CEO, who also leads President Donald Trump’s DOGE organization, of using AI-generated, copyright-violating images inspired by “Blade Runner” at a Tesla press event.

A filing submitted to the U.S. District Court Central District of California, Western Division late Tuesday states that Musk’s attorneys will move to dismiss “all claims” against both Musk and Tesla. Dismissing a case “with prejudice” means it is permanently closed and cannot be reopened.

The plaintiff in the case, Alcon Entertainment, plans to oppose the motion, according to the filing.

In October, Alcon, the production company behind “Blade Runner 2049,” filed a lawsuit against Musk, Tesla, and Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) for allegedly infringing on its intellectual property rights.

Alcon claims that Musk and WBD sought to use imagery from “Blade Runner 2049” to promote Tesla’s concept cars without obtaining proper rights. When Alcon refused to provide these rights, Tesla allegedly used an AI model to replicate the imagery at Musk’s direction.

During the event, Musk showcased this allegedly fake “Blade Runner” imagery while discussing the film itself.

Alcon’s complaint also alleges that it was not informed of any agreements between Tesla and WBD related to the promotional materials. The suit seeks to prevent Tesla from further using the disputed imagery and claims unspecified damages, citing potential violations of the U.S. Copyright Act.

The original complaint from Alcon’s legal team suggests that Tesla could have incurred significant costs to obtain rights to use the “Blade Runner 2049” brand in its promotional materials if Alcon had agreed to it.
