During a United Nations General Assembly in March of this year, 132 countries voted “yes” for Pacific Climate Justice.
My first rally against deep sea mining at Bondi Beach was a stirring experience. As the Greenpeace Gift in Wills administrator, diving right into action during my first week was truly inspiring. Growing up in Scotland, my love and respect for the ocean have always been profound, making the idea of deep sea mining deeply troubling to me. I am grateful to work alongside dedicated individuals at Greenpeace who are committed to stopping this destructive process before it even begins.
Activism is the driving force behind environmental change. On World Environment Day, I participated in a rally at Bondi Beach with a group of ocean enthusiasts dressed as sea creatures. Holding a large banner that read ‘Hell no, Albo! Stop Deep Sea Mining,’ we made a bold statement.
The rally was more than just a protest; it was a powerful expression of our collective love for the ocean and our determination to protect it.
Deep-sea mining poses a significant threat to our oceans, as activities like dredging, scraping, and cutting the seabed endanger unique and largely unexplored ecosystems. The Metals Company, led by Australian businessman Gerard Barron, is seeking the world’s first license to mine the Pacific Ocean.
A crucial milestone was achieved at the International Seabed Authority (ISA) with the appointment of Leticia Carvalho, a Brazilian oceanographer and diplomat, as the new Secretary General, succeeding Michael Lodge. Carvalho’s appointment aligns with the global resistance to deep-sea mining, which puts both known and unknown species in the Pacific at risk.
