New 15-Year Sentence Given to US Citizen Imprisoned in Russia Following Espionage Conviction

A Russian-born U.S. citizen who was already serving time in Russia for a bribery conviction has now been given a second sentence for espionage.

Eugene Spector, who was born and raised in Leningrad, Russia, before becoming a U.S. citizen, has been sentenced to an additional 15 years for espionage, as reported by Russian news agencies.

A Moscow court filed espionage charges against Spector in August of last year, but specific details about the case were not disclosed publicly.

The U.S. State Department has acknowledged reports of a U.S. citizen being sentenced in Russia and is closely monitoring the situation.

Spector, a former executive at a medical equipment company in Russia, was previously sentenced in September 2022 to three and a half years in prison for facilitating bribes to an aide of former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich.

Dvorkovich, who served as a deputy prime minister under former Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev from 2012 to 2018, is currently the head of the international chess federation FIDE.
