HMD is known for its budget-friendly Android phones and tablets, and it has recently launched a potentially life-saving product for adventurers. The OffGrid accessory pairs with any smartphone and allows texting via satellite networks – enabling communication from remote locations.
The device is designed to be tough and compact, making it suitable for outdoor activities. It is compatible with both Android and iOS devices and connects to the Skylo satellite network, which has powered other communication devices and services in the past, including the Motorola Defy Link. Currently, it provides satellite coverage in select areas in North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand.
Once paired with your phone, the palm-sized OffGrid allows you to use its companion app to send texts to your contacts. Recipients can respond through the app or via regular SMS and easily access your precise location.
In addition, the OffGrid can send preset check-in messages to your contacts at the touch of a button and trigger an SOS in emergencies such as being stranded in the wilderness or sustaining an injury. The SOS signal is received by Overwatch x Rescue, a 24/7 service that coordinates global rescue efforts and medical assistance with nearly a thousand search-and-rescue agencies worldwide.
The OffGrid is IP68 weather-sealed, certified to MIL-STD-810H military-grade durability standards, and offers three days of battery life on a single charge. Priced at US$200, it also requires a subscription plan starting at $80/year for up to 350 messages.
Compared to other options like Garmin’s InReach Mini 2 and InReach Messenger Plus, the OffGrid offers a more affordable solution with similar features. For more information, visit the product page and learn about the Overwatch x Rescue service here.
