Newlyweds opt for McDonald’s and pocket savings on wedding day celebration

A happy couple decided to forgo a grand, expensive wedding and opted for their “dream wedding” at a cost of less than $600.

Known only as Ellie, 26, and Alex, 27, the couple from the U.K. revealed that original plans for their wedding day would have amounted to about £8,000 – approximately $10,000 in the United States.

They discovered that they could get married at the local registry office for just a little over $70 without the “pressure of impressing guests,” Ellie mentioned.

Ellie wore a white gown that cost around $300, while Alex donned a suit worth $188.

Instead of the thousands they had initially budgeted, they only spent about $574 on their June 2024 wedding, they shared.

Instead of a traditional catered wedding, the couple opted for a visit to a McDonald’s drive-thru for some cheeseburgers and sodas.

“We couldn’t justify splurging £20,000 to £30,000 on just one day,” shared Ellie with Jam Press.

“I just wanted to get married.”

While Alex would have preferred a big wedding, for Ellie, “that’s my idea of hell,” she revealed.

“I just wanted to get married,” she added.

The couple explored other venues that would have been costly — “and our guests would have had to book rooms on top of that,” Ellie mentioned.

The couple’s families also assisted in covering some of the event’s expenses. Ellie’s mother provided her bouquet, while her friend styled her hair, as the bride told Jam Press.

After their wedding ceremony, the two celebrated by going to a McDonald’s drive-thru.

“It was so good,” she remarked. “When my friend was doing my hair, she was asking if I was nervous – and I wasn’t at all.”

Following their wedding, they hosted a small reception for 20 family members and friends, with their parents covering a bit over $600 for the office venue, a buffet, and DJ.

They also saved on photography costs by having Alex’s brother take the photos.

Guests were provided with disposable cameras to capture their own moments during the reception.

The low-frills wedding was an “amazing day,” the bride said.

Instead of investing in their wedding day, Ellie and Alex are now focusing on buying a home, raising their children, and planning for a “nice honeymoon.”

“We thought if we didn’t just do it then we never would, so we got married in a registry office with my mom and Alex’s brother,” the bride explained.

The couple did not want to spend thousands of dollars on a wedding — and the bride said she was nervous about impressing guests.

The low-frills wedding was an “amazing day,” Ellie mentioned, and she expressed no regrets.

“It’s an amazing thing to celebrate, but people should just do it [the way] they want it,” she stated.
