Norah O’Donnell, the CBS News anchor, is stepping down from her role as the face of “CBS Evening News” but will continue as a correspondent for the network.
In a note to staff on Tuesday, O’Donnell announced her decision to leave the anchor and managing editor position of the CBS Evening News after this year’s election, expressing gratitude for the amazing five years she has had with the network and her excitement for new opportunities.
O’Donnell, who will be covering the upcoming presidential election, will also contribute to various CBS News programs, including “CBS Evening News” and “60 Minutes” in her new role.
CBS News CEO Wendy McMahon released a statement praising O’Donnell and promising more information about the network’s plans soon.
O’Donnell took over as anchor of the “CBS Evening News” in 2019 after co-hosting CBS’ weekday morning show previously.
CBS has faced challenges in finding a long-term anchor for its evening program since Dan Rather’s departure in 2005, with talents like Katie Couric, Scott Pelley, and Jeff Glor not lasting more than six years.
