Playing board-sports video games can be fun, but it’s not the same as the real thing. BoarDrop system offers a solution by putting players on an actual multi-purpose board.
Created by a gaming tech startup called BoarDrop, this system is currently seeking funding through a Kickstarter campaign. It’s not meant for dropping boars or any other animals.
At the core of the system is the “Core Board,” which is compatible with a Snowboard kit, Surfskate kit, and Balance Board accessory. Made of Canadian maple wood and fiberglass, the Core Board also features a layer of grippy EVA foam and includes electronics like a microprocessor, Bluetooth module, IMU, haptic feedback motors, and a lithium-ion battery. It even has a stylish blue LED strip around its edges.
To play snowboarding games, users attach the Snowboard kit’s shoe bindings and base board to the Core Board. Their movements are detected by the Core Board and wirelessly transmitted to the gaming console for a realistic experience.
Users can steer, brake, and perform tricks like Spin 180s, Spin 360s, Ollies, and Manuals. The haptic feedback motors provide vibration feedback when these tricks are executed successfully.
Skateboarding games work similarly, with the Surfskate kit replacing the Snowboard kit. For core-strength exercises, the Balance Board accessory is used with the Core Board.
An app accompanies the system, allowing users to set goals, access training plans, do workouts, and track progress. A wireless handheld controller is also included for games requiring extra inputs.
BoarDrop is currently compatible with popular games on various platforms like PlayStation 5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Apple TV, and more. A single charge provides around 10 hours of gameplay.
If the system goes into production, a pledge of $239 (retail $398) will get you the Core Board, with additional kits and accessories available. You can watch the BoarDrop system in action in the video below.
