Patrick Mahomes Overcomes Ankle Injury to Lead Chiefs to Win Against Texans

Patrick Mahomes continues his streak of being undefeated against ankle injuries.

The star quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes, showcased his resilience on Saturday by playing through an ankle sprain to lead his team to a 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans. He threw for 260 yards, with one touchdown pass and one touchdown run.

Mahomes’ availability was uncertain after he suffered the sprain in the previous week’s game against the Cleveland Browns. However, he did not miss any practice sessions and stuck to his usual routine despite the injury.

This is not the first time Mahomes has played through an ankle sprain. In the 2022 playoffs, he returned after sustaining the injury in the AFC championship game to beat the Cincinnati Bengals and then led his team to victory in the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Despite the mild nature of his recent ankle sprain, which usually requires two to four weeks to heal completely, Mahomes has a track record of recovering faster than expected.

The last time Mahomes missed a game due to injury was in 2019 when he sat out just two games after dislocating his patella against the Denver Broncos.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid expressed his amazement at Mahomes’ quick recovery from injury, noting his mental toughness and mindset towards rehabilitation.

“I’ve been through it with him before, and he amazes me every time he does it,” Reid said. “He’s so mentally tough. It’s a mindset he has going into it. Where he was a few days ago, I’d probably say it was a longshot. He’s done well with it.”

Mahomes had initially downplayed his chances of playing this week, stating that he wouldn’t want to hinder the game plan with his injury. However, he defied expectations and led his team to victory.

“I don’t want to limit the game plan,” Mahomes said. “That’s another thing for me. I want to be able to still be able to move around the pocket so we’re not just sitting in one spot the whole entire game and leading the D-line to get after it. So, it’s about me finding that balance and seeing where I’m at and, like I said, I won’t know until closer to the end of this week.”

With this victory, Mahomes and the Chiefs are inching closer to making history. They have now won their 16th consecutive one-possession game, surpassing the record held by the 2004 New England Patriots.

But more significantly, they are just one win away from securing the top seed in the AFC, which would provide them with a first-round bye and home-field advantage in their quest for another Super Bowl title.

Mahomes and the Chiefs have their sights set on becoming the first team in NFL history to win three consecutive Super Bowls, and Mahomes’ latest display of heroics has brought them a step closer to achieving that goal.
