Playing Storm Incorrectly in ‘Marvel Rivals’

Season 1 of Marvel Rivals has brought about a shift in the meta, especially with the super-buffed character Storm. There is a noticeable difference in her usage and win rates between Competitive and Quickplay modes. Storm, who used to be one of the weakest characters, received several buffs in season 1:

  • Increased Wind Blade projectile speed from 100m/s to 150m/s and left-click damage from 50 to 55,
  • Increased Bolt Rush damage from 70 to 80.
  • After the Omega Hurricane ultimate, bonus health increased to 450 from 350. After ultimate, health will diminish at 100 per second instead of instantly.

These buffs have propelled Storm to the top of competitive play with a 56% win rate, the highest among all characters, and a 44% ban rate. However, in Quick Play, her win rate is negative at 47%, almost 10% lower than in Competitive mode.

Many players make a common mistake when playing Storm: they try to utilize her as a flier.

While Storm can fly, playing her like Iron Man can put you at a disadvantage. Here are the main reasons why:

  • She lacks the mobility options of Iron Man and benefits more from traditional tank protection when closer to the ground.
  • Her lightning attack pierces enemies, making it easier to hit multiple targets in a line when on the ground.
  • Flying high reduces the effectiveness of her buffs, whereas being on the ground allows for wider coverage for buffs and attacks.

Playing Storm like a flier goes against intuition, but her kit is designed in a way that punishes that style of gameplay. Understanding this can be a key factor in improving win rates, especially in competitive play.
