Record-Breaking Travel Anticipated for July 4th Holiday in Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — AAA is forecasting a significant increase in domestic travel during the Independence Day holiday period from June 28 to July 6.

According to AAA, 72.2 million Americans are expected to travel, marking a 2.4% increase over last year and a notable rise from 2019.

“Independence Day is one of the most popular times for travel,” said Debbie Haas, Vice President of AAA Travel. “This year, we’re seeing strong demand for road trips, flights, and cruises.”

AAA estimates that 61.6 million Americans will drive, which is a 2.2% increase from last year and the highest number ever recorded. In Minnesota, many will head to lakefront destinations or local fireworks shows.

“We stick out the brutal winters for the beautiful weather and enjoyment of a Minnesota summer,” said Brynna Knapp, spokesperson for AAA.

Drivers should prepare their vehicles as AAA responded to nearly 5,000 roadside assistance calls in Minnesota last year for issues like dead batteries and flat tires. Gas prices are currently averaging $3.10 per gallon, about 10 cents less than last year’s holiday.

Air travel is also reaching record numbers with 5.84 million people flying, a 1.4% increase over last year. Round-trip domestic flights are averaging $810, up 4% from 2024.

Travelers should be aware of potential traffic congestion, especially on July 2 and July 6, with the busiest times in the afternoon. AAA advises traveling in the early morning to avoid delays.

For those considering travel insurance, Haas recommended it to protect against unexpected disruptions. “Travel insurance provides peace of mind,” Haas said.
