Report: ByteDance allegedly bypassing US restrictions to purchase chips from Nvidia

ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is planning to purchase Nvidia chips in 2025 despite facing U.S. restrictions.

According to a report from The Information, ByteDance intends to invest $7 billion in Nvidia chips by 2025. This move would make ByteDance one of the leading owners of Nvidia chips globally, despite efforts by the U.S. to limit Chinese companies’ access to these AI chips.

In response to U.S. export restrictions on certain AI chips to countries like China, which is where ByteDance is based, the company has found a workaround. ByteDance is not bringing the chips directly to China but is storing them in data centers in other regions such as Southeast Asia, as reported by The Information. This strategy allows ByteDance to comply with the restrictions without violating them.

ByteDance is known for operating Doubao, China’s popular AI chatbot with 51 million active users, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

TechCrunch has reached out to ByteDance for further details.
