Report: Serena Williams considering investment in women’s flag football league

The NFL is reportedly considering the launch of a professional women’s flag football league.

The new league is expected to support the sport’s long-term growth and could potentially have backing from high-profile investors. Tennis icon Serena Williams and her husband, tech entrepreneur Alexis Ohanian, through their 776 investment firm, are in discussions with the NFL about this initiative.

The NFL is reviewing ten proposals, including ones from TKO Group Holdings, Marc Lasry’s Avenue Capital Group, and Ice Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz.

Endeavor’s conglomerate TKO, a result of the 2023 WWE and UFC merger, is one of the interested parties.

SMAC Entertainment, founded by Michael Strahan, and Connect Ventures, a CAA and New Enterprise Associates partnership, have also submitted proposals to the league.

The NFL has been a longtime supporter of flag football, particularly in youth sports through its NFL Flag program.

Flag football is expected to feature in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, although the participation of active NFL players remains uncertain.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell highlighted the interest in pro flag football at the recent annual meetings in Florida.

“There is significant interest in a professional flag football league,” Goodell stated at a press conference, acknowledging the receipt of proposals from potential investors.

Goodell also discussed professional flag football during February’s Super Bowl in New Orleans.

None of the interested parties responded immediately to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. Information regarding the required investment amount for the potential league was not disclosed.

Fourteen U.S. states have official women’s flag football at the high school level, making it a varsity sport. Some colleges have women’s flag football teams as well.
