Reports indicate that individuals associated with Elon Musk are reportedly assuming control of various government agencies, such as the Office of Personnel Management, the Treasury Department, and the General Services Administration.
According to The Washington Post, the highest-ranking career official at the Treasury Department is resigning due to conflicts with members of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) regarding access to critical payment systems.
DOGE officials have been requesting access to these systems, which channel over $6 trillion annually to programs like Social Security and Medicare, since November. Meanwhile, actions taken by the Trump administration to impede federal spending have met with criticism for potentially violating the Constitution.
Reuters also reported that Musk’s aides have restricted access to federal employees’ personal data, and documents reveal their control over the General Services Administration, a key government agency.
According to Wired, tech workers across various government agencies are undergoing rigorous scrutiny and code reviews by Musk’s team. There are also reports of Musk’s involvement in an initiative offering government employees the option to resign.
The disruption caused by Musk within the federal government mirrors the tumultuous period following his control of Twitter, as depicted in various publications. It signifies an unprecedented power shift within the U.S. government, contradicting the initial objectives of DOGE as envisioned by Donald Trump after his election victory.
Subsequent developments, including the renaming of the U.S. Digital Service as the “U.S. DOGE service” through an executive order by Trump, have further integrated Musk’s influence into government operations. Reports suggest Musk maintains a presence in the White House and reportedly resides in the DOGE office.
