Reports: Robert Lewandowski urges Barcelona to avoid signing 24-year-old striker to prevent losing his position in team

According to a report from El Nacional, Robert Lewandowski has advised Barcelona against signing Lille striker Jonathan David in the summer of 2025. The Poland ace is reportedly not keen on competing for playing time in the number nine position.

The intervention of the former Bayern Munich forward could potentially influence Barcelona’s decision not to pursue the Canadian striker. Despite being 36 years old and having a contract with his current side until the summer of 2026, Lewandowski’s preference may impact the club’s transfer plans.

On the contrary, signing David on a free transfer in 2025 when his contract with Lille expires could be a wise move for Barcelona. The 24-year-old has performed well this season, scoring 17 goals and providing four assists in 24 matches across competitions. Barcelona sees him as a suitable long-term successor to Lewandowski.

Since joining Barcelona from Bayern Munich for a reported €45 million in the summer of 2022, Lewandowski has made 117 appearances, scoring 82 goals and providing 19 assists. He has won the LaLiga title once and the Pichichi trophy once during his time at the club.

Lewandowski continues to be a key player for Hansi Flick, with 23 goals in 22 appearances across competitions this season.

Barcelona’s interest in potential strike options extends beyond Jonathan David. Reports from Portugal are linking Sporting’s number nine, Viktor Gyokeres, with a move to Camp Nou (via beIN Sports).

However, signing Gyokeres will come at a high cost and face competition from other European clubs. The Sweden international is expected to command a fee between €68 million and €78 million.

Premier League clubs like Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United are also reportedly monitoring Gyokeres. His past association with Sporting’s current manager Ruben Amorim may attract him to Old Trafford.

Gyokeres, 26, has had an impressive season, scoring 25 goals in 23 appearances across competitions. He is under contract with Sporting until the summer of 2028.
