Revolutionary gaming system combines the best of Wii and Kinect, offering full-body immersion

Although full-body gaming systems like Wii have been surpassed by VR technology, US startup Rebuff Reality is still entering the scene with their new BodyLink gaming platform. This system aims to continue where previous systems like Kinect left off.

Currently running a Kickstarter campaign, BodyLink consists of two main components: a wireless handheld motion controller with haptic feedback and a main console connected to the user’s large TV screen.

The console features two cameras. One camera tracks the player’s body position in real-time at a frame rate of 90 fps without the need for any markers, thanks to a wide-angle lens and infrared light. It can also track up to four players simultaneously. The other camera captures 4K video of the player during gameplay, allowing for a full-body shot to be superimposed over the gameplay recording for easy social media sharing.

The handheld controller is used for in-game actions like swinging tennis rackets, golf clubs, or shooting guns. Its controls can also be used for traditional couch-based games.

All data from the cameras and controller is processed in real-time by an Android chipset, an 8-core CPU, and a 4-core GPU. The BodyLink console can also relay gameplay from a third-party VR headset to the TV for other viewers in the room to follow along.

The system is planned to come with Rebuff Reality’s Dance Dash game preinstalled. Other titles will be available through Google Play in the future.

If BodyLink goes into production, backers can get their own system for a pledge of US$149, with a retail price expected to be $299.
