Romania’s Presidential Poll Won by Pro-Putin TikTok Star

The far-right politician, who supports Putin, surprised many by winning the first round of Romania’s presidential elections on Sunday. His surge on social media went unnoticed by pollsters.

Călin Georgescu, 62, a former member of the ultranationalist AUR party, ran as an independent and was initially polling in single digits. But his TikTok campaign clips portraying him as a horseback riding, martial arts fighting anti-establishment figure gained traction recently.

“It’s a TikTok win,” said Romanian analyst Ion M. Ionita. “You don’t need a party, just need to go viral on social media, and he has succeeded.”

Georgescu, known for his religious, ultraconservative views that resonate with rural and young male voters, claimed victory with 23% of the votes without spending any money on his campaign.

Since no candidate secured 50%, Georgescu will face liberal leader Elena Lasconi in the run-off vote on December 8.

Georgescu’s success reflects the rise of Trump-style populism in Europe and signals a shift in Romanian attitudes towards Russia and its conflict in Ukraine.

Georgescu criticized Romania’s Nato membership and military bases on its soil, advocating for closer ties with Russia despite its actions in Ukraine.

Georgescu’s win was reported by the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, touting his support for an alliance with Russia.

A pro-Russia president would be detrimental to Romania, especially with the ongoing war in Ukraine, according to European parliament member Siegfried Muresan.

The victory of Georgescu is seen as a setback for centrist candidates who have faced allegations of corruption and mismanagement, allowing Georgescu to position himself as an anti-establishment figure.

If Georgescu wins the run-off, he will become the most powerful figure in Romania, managing foreign relations and the military.

Georgescu’s popularity among Romanians abroad and in several counties secured his strong showing in the election.

AUR and SOS, fringe far-right parties, quickly endorsed Georgescu for the run-off to capitalize on his popularity.

Georgescu’s rise in the election has raised concerns about the manipulation of democracy, with experts pointing to the potential consequences for Romania.
