Ryan Joyce is confident he can thwart Luke Littler’s quest for World Darts Championship glory and has cautioned the teenager that he needs to elevate his performance to defeat him at the Alexandra Palace on Monday.
Littler advanced with a 3-1 triumph over Ryan Meikle in his opening match and followed it up with a win against Ian White in the third round on Saturday evening. Despite his victory, the 17-year-old struggled with his finishing, missing 24 out of 37 attempts at doubling on his way to the last 16. Littler acknowledged that he must enhance his accuracy on the outer ring in the upcoming rounds.
Joyce earned a spot in the fourth round after a hard-fought victory over Ryan Searle earlier in the day. The 39-year-old, confident in his ability to trouble the tournament favorite, emphasized his proficiency in double conversions and securing a top 16 ranking by the year’s end.
“I’ll approach the game believing I can secure a victory, but I’ll also acknowledge being the underdog. In sports, we’ve witnessed numerous instances where the favorite doesn’t always emerge victorious, making it more exciting to watch,” said Joyce reflecting on his win.
“If Luke Littler performs at his peak, he can defeat anyone easily. However, if he has a slight dip in form, he might find himself level after four sets. I won’t miss many doubles against him, so he’ll need to excel in his game – just not at his absolute best!”
Littler cautious of Joyce challenge
Littler showcased a dozen maximums and clinched a set in just 39 darts during his victory over White, setting up a potential semi-final clash with defending champion Luke Humphries. “I know I have room for improvement, but in set-play, winning is what matters,” stated Littler. “I was satisfied with my scoring performance.”
“For Littler, tougher challenges lie ahead,” said former Lakeside champion Mark Webster. “Joyce excels in finishing, and if given the opportunity, he will capitalize on it. Littler should be mindful of that.
“Although Littler is enjoying the competition, the pressure is on him as the favorite. Every player wants a shot at him following strong performances by Ryan Meikle and Ian White. Ryan is next in line and will relish the challenge and the chance to make a statement.”
