Several injured in crash involving BART police cars in Oakland, currently under investigation by Oakland PD

Law enforcement officials in Oakland, California, reported a multi-vehicle crash involving two police vehicles that resulted in several injuries on Saturday.

The crash took place in the 700 block of Mandela Parkway near the West Oakland train station. Images from the scene depicted damaged police vehicles with shattered windows and open doors, along with debris on the street.

Authorities were notified of the incident around 2:45 p.m. local time. According to Oakland police, two police cars belonging to the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Police Department were part of the crash.

“Several individuals in the vehicles sustained injuries during the collision,” a spokesperson from OPD stated. “Emergency medical personnel responded to the scene to provide assistance and transported the injured individuals to nearby hospitals for treatment.”

In August, the president of the Oakland Police Officer’s Association (OPOA) criticized former Mayor Sheng Thao, who was later recalled in November, for allegedly not addressing crime in the city effectively.

“Every day, our residents feel the impact. They are unable to leave their homes or walk the streets of Oakland, calling 911 and not receiving the services they need,” expressed OPOA’s Huy Nguyen during that period.

In July, the Oakland Police Department faced backlash for allegedly downplaying its crime statistics after claiming a 33% decrease in crimes. At that time, the police report was touted as an achievement for the city by Thao.
