Shoppers panic-buy toilet paper amid port strike

There is a surge in demand for toilet paper among US shoppers due to concerns about potential disruption from a port strike and increased demand in areas affected by Hurricane Helene.

Many Costco stores across the country are out of stock for delivery of Charmin toilet paper as well as other brands and paper towels, according to the retailer’s website.

Costco Wholesale Corp.’s Chief Financial Officer Gary Millerchip noted an increase in demand for everyday items in recent days, particularly paper products. The company does not anticipate any supply challenges due to the strike and is working to restock quickly.

Toilet paper, mainly manufactured in the US, was one of the first items to face supply-chain issues during the pandemic due to hoarding. Analysts visiting Costco stores in northern New Jersey observed similar behaviors to the start of the pandemic.

The International Longshoremen’s Association, the union representing workers in major Eastern US and Gulf Coast ports, went on strike on Oct. 1, leading to concerns about supply chain disruptions.

Kroger Co. has imposed purchase limits on certain products, including paper towels, toilet paper, and water, due to increased demand. Walmart Inc. and some Target Corp. stores are also experiencing shortages of toilet paper.

Kimberly-Clark Corp., the manufacturer of Scott branded toilet paper and Kleenex tissues, stated that the port strike has not impacted their ability to supply products. Procter & Gamble Co., the maker of Charmin, did not provide comments on the situation.
