Social scientist cautions that failure of adult men to achieve key milestones could have negative consequences for society

A social scientist and author expressed concern to CNN about the increasing number of men in their 30s and 40s who are not purchasing homes or starting families.

Richard Reeves, author of “Of Boys and Men,” discussed with CNN host Michael Smerconish the societal shift in America where a significant group of men are not meeting the traditional adult milestones like owning a home or having children, as their parents did.

Reeves commented on a recent Wall Street Journal article that addressed this trend, emphasizing that these milestones are not just being delayed but completely missed by many.

He further stated, “And right now it looks like it‘s the economic and social prospects of young men that are the big issue facing us.”

Citing concerning data, Reeves highlighted, “For me, it‘s the fact that men in their 30s and 40s without a college degree, half of them don‘t have children in their home.”

Reeves, who is also the president of the American Institute for Boys and Men, observed the shift where men are not just delaying these milestones but failing to achieve them at all.

Expressing his worries, Reeves stated, “Taking more time to educate oneself, establish a family, or achieve financial stability may be positive, but what’s concerning now is that these milestones are simply not being reached.”

He also noted, “Men, in particular, still aspire to have children and get married, yet they feel incapable of accomplishing these goals for some reason.”

Reeves attributed the issue to a blend of economic and cultural factors, suggesting that young men are struggling financially, contributing to the gender gap in society.

Addressing the problem, he emphasized the need to enhance economic opportunities for young men, focusing on investments in education tailored for men, vocational training, and addressing stagnant male wages.

Furthermore, he stressed the importance of reducing tension around cultural and political issues that have created division between young men and women.

He pointed out the lack of support for men and women to build families, buy homes, and start their lives, underscoring a societal oversight exacerbating the problem.
