Spotify introduces special Premium membership designed for children

Spotify is rolling out a new way for young listeners to explore music, unveiling a new Premium membership trial specifically designed for kids.

Unlike Spotify Kids — an app for children offering singalongs, soundtracks, and playlists handpicked by Spotify — the new offering is a parent-managed Premium membership for users under 13, providing them with enhanced access to the app while under their caregivers’ supervision.

“As young listeners begin their musical journey with a managed account, through this new trial, they will have access to many of the features and functionalities that Spotify users enjoy, including personalized features that make music discovery on Spotify so engaging and distinctive,” stated Spotify.

Premium Family subscribers will have the option to add a managed account to their plan, which parents can then customize using in-app settings. This enables parents to block particular songs or artists, as well as regulate the playback of explicit content, including accompanying visual media.

Spotify mentions that the updated Family plan will also serve as a solution for parents whose account recommendations (and annual Wrapped data) have been taken over by their children’s music taste — Users have long requested a “Parent Mode” to filter out kid-oriented content.

The trial is currently only accessible to users in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden.
