Stockton International Riverside Festival: A Celebration of the Arts

The festival, from August 1 to 3, will host part of the Without Walls 2025 programme, featuring nine newly commissioned works that celebrate creativity in public spaces.

The programme, supported by Without Walls and developed in partnership with leading UK festivals, will tour nationally in 2025 and includes a mix of contemporary circus, dance, theatre, and interactive installations.CompanyDHW Go Grandad Go! CompanyDHW Go Grandad Go! (Image: Supplied)

Ralph Kennedy, director of Without Walls, said: “The Without Walls 2025 programme showcases the very best in outdoor arts, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to announce this incredible lineup.

“From powerful dance and circus works to imaginative theatre and striking installations, these nine shows promise unforgettable moments for audiences across England.

“With 79 performance days planned – 12 more than last year – and every artist guaranteed at least four festival bookings, we’re delivering a platform for bold, boundary-breaking work to flourish.”

Among the returning artists are established names such as Artizani and Stopgap Dance Company, alongside emerging talents like CompanyDHW and Sadiq Ali Company.

The 2025 programme spans a diverse range of themes and genres, with a strong focus on accessibility, sustainability, and inclusivity.

One of the highlights is Hydropunk, an interactive environmental installation by Artizani.

Built collaboratively with the public, Hydropunk uses a playful network of taps, pipes, pumps, and valves to create a chaotic yet engaging water machine.CompanyDHW Go Grandad Go! CompanyDHW Go Grandad Go! (Image: Supplied)

The piece challenges audiences to rethink water use and conservation, with only 1,000 litres available.

Participants must work together to minimise waste and recycle water throughout the experience.

Also featured is Go Grandad Go! by CompanyDHW, a hip-hop theatre dance show exploring intergenerational relationships through movement, culture, and storytelling.

Led by Dani Harris-Walters, the piece considers alternative ways to bridge generational gaps, placing authenticity and community at its core.

Levantes Dance Theatre presents HUG, an outdoor circus theatre performance that explores human connection and the environment through aerial dance, physical theatre, and immersive set design.

Other works include Waiting Song by Mish Weaver, Roots to Rise by Nandita Shankardass and Tell Me by Sadiq Ali Company.

Theatre-Rites and Miguel Altunaga will debut Eshu at the Crossroads, a family show featuring puppetry, dance, and music.

Tilly Ingram Theatre’s The Hide offers a reflective birdwatching experience informed by the artist’s lived experience with a non-visible disability.

Without Walls is a network of more than 30 festivals and arts organisations committed to bringing outdoor arts to towns and cities across the UK.

Since 2007, it has commissioned and toured over 200 new UK productions across 22 countries.
