The Volkswagen ID. Buzz has led to the creation of numerous camper vans, but until now, none of them have featured a proper pop-up sleeper roof. Dutch builder Tonke is changing that by introducing a unique spin on the concept. Their new pop-top design combines a rare sideways orientation with a rooftop-tent-style to provide increased sleeping space and comfort, allowing the camper van to accommodate and sleep a family of five.
While not as common as the traditional wedge-style pop-up roof, the side-lifting pop-top is not an entirely new idea. Companies like Dormobile have been using this design since the 1950s, and we have seen modern vans with side-folding roofs from other conversion companies as well.
Tonke, instead of replicating previous roof designs, has reimagined the side-popping roof into a modern, spacious evolution. The new roof operates similarly to an expanding hardshell rooftop tent, integrated into the vehicle roof structure. With the additional space from the expanding floor, Tonke can fit a near-queen-size bed, offering ample space for two adults or possibly three small children. The pop-up roof also provides standing room inside the van, a luxury enjoyed after a night in the factory roof of an ID. Buzz.
The fold-out pop-up roof design also functions as an awning, providing weather and sun protection for the area below, whether for sitting or cooking with the side kitchen available indoors or outdoors. Tonke will offer this pop-up roof as an option on the new Buzz Explorer camper van, set to feature an indoor/outdoor swivel kitchen like the ones offered for other models.
More details on the Explorer and Trail models, including pricing options and features, will be available once they are officially launched by Tonke.
