Suzy Izzard Receives Honorary Doctorate from University of Sussex for Contributions to Arts and Activism

Comedian, actor, and long-time LGBTQ+ rights campaigner Suzy Izzard – also known as Eddie Izzard – has been awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Sussex in recognition of her contributions to the arts, activism, and humanitarian work.

The award was presented during the university’s summer graduation ceremony on Monday, 21 July. Izzard, 63, expressed her gratitude, saying: “It is an honour to be conferred this doctorate in recognition of my work as an actor, comedian, my activism and charity work over the years. It is even more special that this is being awarded by the University of Sussex as this is the county in which I grew up and one which holds a special place in my heart.”

Izzard, who spent much of her childhood in Bexhill and Eastbourne, has been a trailblazer in British public life. Openly trans, she has used her platform to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, gender inclusivity, and social justice. Her visibility and openness about her identity have helped shift public perceptions and foster greater acceptance, particularly for gender-diverse individuals.

Throughout her career, Izzard has championed equality both on and off stage. She has spoken at numerous LGBTQ+ events, supported trans youth initiatives, and campaigned for inclusive policies in education and healthcare. Her activism is rooted in a belief in “radical fairness” – a principle she often cites as central to her worldview.

In addition to her advocacy, Izzard has raised millions for charity through extraordinary physical feats. In 2009, she completed 43 marathons in 51 days for Sport Relief, raising £1.8 million. She later ran 27 marathons in 27 days in South Africa, raising a further £135 million.

The University of Sussex’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sasha Roseneil, praised Izzard and other honorary graduands for their “inspirational public service” and their efforts to make the world “a progressively better place.”
