We cannot back down
We are now facing the reality of a second Trump presidency.
There is no time to waste. We must use our fears, our grief, and even our anger to resist the harmful policies that Donald Trump will implement. We recommit ourselves to our roles as journalists and writers of integrity and conscience.
Today, we prepare ourselves for the challenges ahead. It will require a courageous attitude, a well-informed mind, thoughtful analysis, and compassionate resistance. We are up against the implementation of Project 2025, a far-right supreme court, political authoritarianism, increasing inequality and homelessness, a looming climate crisis, and conflicts overseas. The Nation will continue to uncover and suggest solutions, support investigative journalism, and stand united as a community to maintain hope and opportunity. The Nation‘s work will persist—whether in favorable or challenging times—to cultivate innovative ideas and visions, to strengthen our commitment to truth-telling and thorough reporting, and to promote unity in a fractured nation.
With an impressive 160 years of fearless, independent journalism behind us, our mission today is consistent with the founding principles of The Nation by abolitionists—to uphold democracy and freedom, to be a guiding light in times of resistance, and to imagine and strive for a better future.
The current situation looks grim, the opposition is fierce, but as the late Nation editorial board member Toni Morrison once said, “No! This is precisely the time when artists ought to work. There is no space for despair, no place for self-pity, no reason for silence, no room for fear. We express ourselves, we write, we use language. This is how civilizations recover.”
I implore you to stand with The Nation and contribute today.
Onward,
