Legal representatives for luxury broker Tal Alexander have filed a motion to reopen his detention hearing after a failed attempt to obtain bail last week. Tal, along with his brothers Oren and Alon, was arrested on federal charges of sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking.
In the motion, Tal’s parents have offered a bond secured by their assets in any amount, as a second effort to secure bail for Tal.
The motion argues that the hearing should be reopened due to the government’s failure to produce Jencks Act material after the witness’ testimony on Friday. It also disputes the claim that Tal poses a flight risk, citing his U.S. citizenship and family ties.
Tal’s attorneys have stated that the claim that he could flee to Israel is false, as Israel holds an extradition treaty with the U.S. and Tal has no plans to leave the country. They have offered financial documents and witnesses to prove that Tal has no intention of fleeing.
The government has until Wednesday to respond to the motion. Tal is currently in federal detention in Miami, while his brothers are detained in state facilities.
Ongoing legal battles with Side
Side has filed a preliminary injunction against Oren and Tal Alexander and their Side-backed brokerage, Official Partners, as part of a civil lawsuit alleging loan default. With the recent criminal charges against the brothers, Side is pressing for a resolution to their lawsuit, fearing that the loan collateral may be used to cover legal fees.
The DOJ has also reached out to Douglas Elliman to learn more about the brothers’ tenure at the brokerage, as part of the investigation into their alleged criminal activities. Douglas Elliman is cooperating with the DOJ and preparing to provide records and information.
Tracy Tutor and Jessica Cohen, prominent agents at Douglas Elliman, have alleged that they were drugged by the brothers during their time at the brokerage. The federal indictment against the brothers suggests a history of sexual assault and rape dating back to their high school years.
