Teachers ignite controversy with proposed changes to ‘Alphabet Song’ tune, deemed as ‘offensive to the ear’

Social media users have differing opinions on educators’ new approach to teaching the “ABCs” to young students online.

A variation of the “Alphabet Song” has emerged, with letters grouped differently and the ending changed to, “Now I will never forget, I know how to say the alphabet.”

Florida resident Jessica Farmer, a literacy advocate, shared a video on TikTok singing the updated version on her account @Farmerlovesphonics.

Her video received over 13,000 reactions.

Farmer, a Rainbow Phonics lead professional trainer, believes the revised song will benefit literacy development.

She explained that certain aspects of the traditional alphabet song can cause confusion among children.

The updated version addresses and eliminates these issues, according to Farmer.

Although the revised version has been around for decades, it has not been as popular as the traditional one.

Opinions on the change are mixed on TikTok, with some users disapproving and others supporting it.

An Instagram Reel highlighting the confusion of “LMNOP” in the original song garnered over 230,000 likes.

User @mindfulteacherrachel, a first-grade teacher, shared a Reel demonstrating the new grouping of letters to reduce confusion, which received over 10 million views.

Farmer believes the song change is a positive step towards improving children’s literacy rates nationwide.
