Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini emphasized the lack of safety in Gaza since the start of the war in October 2023.
“As the year begins, we received reports of another attack on Al Mawasi resulting in numerous casualties,” he stated, pointing out that there is no humanitarian or safe zone in Gaza.
He cautioned that without a ceasefire, more tragic events will occur every day.
Media under attack
Meanwhile, UNRWA highlighted that international media are being restricted by Israeli authorities from operating and reporting within Gaza.
“International journalists must be allowed access to report freely from Gaza,” the agency stressed.
In related news, the UN human rights office, OHCHR, expressed deep concern over the Palestinian Authority’s suspension of Al Jazeera’s operations in the occupied West Bank.
The Palestinian news agency Wafa accused the Qatar-based channel of broadcasting content that incites deception and strife.
This action reflects a troubling pattern of suppressing freedom of expression in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, OHCHR noted, urging the PA to uphold its international legal obligations.
