The Strategic Importance of Wad Madani City After Being Retaken by the Sudanese Army | Sudan War Updates

Sudan’s army has regained control of Wad Madani, a strategic city located about 200km southeast of Khartoum, dealing a major blow to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

“The Armed Forces leadership congratulates our people on the liberation of Wad Madani this morning. Our forces are now working to clear out the remaining rebel holdouts within the city,” a statement from the army announced.

This development comes after the army made significant advances into Omdurman, the country’s second-largest city, following recent gains in recent months. Wad Madani, a crucial junction for supply routes connecting multiple states, had been under RSF control since December 2023.

RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, vowed that the battle was not yet over. “Today we may have lost a battle, but the war is far from decided,” Dagalo asserted.

The conflict between the army and RSF since April 2023 has resulted in over 12 million people being displaced, leading to a severe humanitarian crisis.

The recapture of Wad Madani raises questions about the SAF’s ability to reclaim territories still under RSF control.

How strategically placed is Wad Madani? Where is it located?

Wad Madani is the capital of Gezira state, centrally located south of Khartoum.

Controlling this agricultural and trading hub allows for easier access to other parts of Sudan. When the RSF took over in 2023, it enabled movement to Sennar, Blue Nile, and White Nile states, cited Al Jazeera’s Hiba Morgan.

The city is crucial for logistical support to and from Khartoum, providing a strategic point for transportation of supplies, according to Sudan policy analyst Hamid Khalafallah.

Initially serving as a sanctuary for displaced families, the city has witnessed brutal attacks by the RSF including violence against civilians, destruction of property, and disruption of daily life.

Has the Sudanese army captured the entire Gezira state?

No, the RSF still controls most of Gezira state along with significant portions of Darfur and other regions in the south.

The SAF’s recent campaign to reclaim Gezira was aided by defections within the RSF ranks, including the top commander in the state, whose troops joined the army in the recent operations.

The army’s advancements in Omdurman and other areas signify a shift in control away from the RSF.

How significant is the recapture of Wad Madani city?

The recapture of Wad Madani marks a significant turning point in the conflict, favoring the army over the RSF.

This strategic gain provides the army access to key regions previously held by the RSF, cutting off their supply lines and trapping their forces.

The city’s recapture boosts morale among the army, particularly within its leadership, garnering support from soldiers, officers, and citizens.

The liberation of Wad Madani also holds promise for addressing Sudan’s hunger crisis by allowing for increased agricultural production and food security.

While offering hope to residents, there are concerns over potential reprisals against pro-democracy activists and civilians in reclaimed territories.

How much territory does the army control now?

In addition to Wad Madani, the army controls northern and eastern regions of Sudan, as well as parts of the capital.

A map outlines areas of control between the SAF and RSF as of October 2024.

How did Sudanese people react to the capture?

Footage shows jubilant Sudanese troops celebrating the liberation of Wad Madani, while local committees and citizens across the country welcomed the advancement as a victory against RSF oppression.

Residents in different cities expressed relief and joy over the news, with chants of unity and freedom resonating in the streets.
