The co-hosts of ABC’s “The View” engaged in a heated debate on Friday regarding Vice President Kamala Harris’s loss to President-elect Donald Trump this week.
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin attributed the loss to the Democratic Party’s failure to effectively communicate with working and middle-class voters, while co-host Sunny Hostin dismissed this idea, instead blaming Americans for embracing bigotry.
“I believe the more pertinent question is what is wrong with America?” Hostin remarked following Trump’s victory in the Electoral College and likely in the popular vote.
Prior to Hostin’s criticism of voters who supported Trump, Griffin pointed fingers at the Democratic Party for not recognizing that the key swing voter in this election cycle was the individual concerned about their economic survival.
Griffin continued by highlighting that Trump garnered significant support from young people and suburban women, typically Democratic voters, due to economic concerns. She emphasized the necessity for the Democratic Party to engage in self-reflection on their messaging.
Hostin dismissed Griffin’s argument and proceeded to list Trump’s alleged transgressions to illustrate her view that the Americans who voted for him are misguided.
Continuing, Hostin questioned the choice of Americans to support divisiveness, xenophobia, racism, and misogyny over inclusivity, prompting the query, “What is wrong with this country?”
Griffin interjected, noting that Trump had won the popular vote, leading Hostin to repeat her question, “Well then what’s wrong with America?”
During the conversation, co-host Sara Haines criticized Hostin’s approach as condescending, leading to a discussion on the Democratic Party’s messaging.
KAMALA HARRIS’ BUNGLED ANSWER ON ‘THE VIEW’ ABOUT BIDEN SEEN AS TURNING POINT IN CAMPAIGN
Hostin persisted, repeatedly asking, “What is wrong with America?”
Haines clarified, stating, “I don’t blame Joe Biden. I don’t blame Kamala Harris. Go back as far as you want. I blame a messaging within the Democratic Party.” Hostin interjected, “You don’t blame the Republican Party at all?”
“I obviously have a problem with the – anyone has a problem with Donald Trump. The bigger question should be, ‘Yes, Sunny, why did they vote for him?”
Hostin retorted, “Yes, so they need to be introspective.” Haines countered, asserting, “No. We need to be introspective. If we voted for Kamala Harris, we need to say, ‘What didn’t resonate with the voters?’”
All the show’s hosts openly supported Harris during the campaign. On the day following the election, more than half of them wore black in mourning of her defeat.
