Thierry Henry defended his former boss Pep Guardiola on Monday Night Football. Henry acknowledged that Guardiola can be “questioned” for the first time due to Manchester City’s recent poor form.
Henry raised concerns about Guardiola allowing high-scoring players like Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez, and Cole Palmer to leave without adequate replacements. He also questioned where the team would find goals when Erling Haaland is not performing at his best.
City has suffered eight defeats in their last 12 games, including a recent 2-1 loss in the Manchester derby, leaving them nine points behind league leaders Liverpool. Their defensive struggles, combined with their lowest goals-per-game tally under Guardiola, have contributed to their downfall.
“It’s the first time we can question his decisions regarding players like Cole Palmer, Riyad Mahrez, Julian Alvarez,” Henry commented.
“Ilkay Gundogan’s return has not resulted in the same goal-scoring form as before.
“The team is lacking in goals from players like Mahrez, Alvarez, Kevin De Bruyne, and Gundogan. Where are those goals?”
Henry expressed confidence that Guardiola would not resign, despite the team’s recent struggles. He praised Guardiola for his consistency and defended him for his managerial style and achievements since their time together at Barcelona.
Jamie Carragher pointed out that City’s current challenges underscore the need for a significant rebuild. He highlighted how previous transitions at the club seemed smoother, despite the departure of key players like Sergio Aguero, David Silva, and Vincent Kompany during Guardiola’s tenure.
“This rebuild feels more pronounced now, despite the success they’ve had in the past without those players,” Carragher commented.
“Every club goes through a phase like this. It’s a test of Pep’s managerial skills to rebuild the team and maintain their competitive edge.”
