Leaders often avoid giving feedback because it’s uncomfortable, but feedback shouldn’t be about us—it’s should be about helping the other person grow. If you’re holding back because it feels awkward, ask yourself: are you protecting their feelings or protecting your own?
Other common communication mistakes business owners make:
- Assuming your team can read your mind.
- Speaking in vague, fuzzy terms.
- Not being specific leads to confusion.
- Feedback should be regular, not a surprise.
- Don’t wait too long to provide feedback to redirect unwanted behaviors.
- Only using feedback when something goes wrong.
- Catch people doing something right!
- Avoid the “compliment sandwich.”
- Use the SBI (Situation, Behavior, Impact) framework for giving feedback.
