You have probably seen super long-wear lip stains that promise up to 24 hours of wear being advertised all over your social media channels. But do they actually work? Lip stains are a go-to for those seeking long-wearing colour that stays put throughout the day. They balance pigmentation and longevity, making them ideal for days or events where you don’t have time for constant touch-ups. So, what makes them long-lasting, what should you look for when choosing one, and how do you get the most out of them?

What Makes Lip Stains Long-Lasting?

Unlike traditional lipsticks, lip stains tend to use dyes or pigments that adhere to the lips, creating a lasting tint that resists fading, even through eating and drinking. Many are even designed to be waterproof, ensuring that the colour remains in place for hours. The draw-back? They can be quite drying, so you may want to consider topping up with a gloss or balm to finish (and this will need topping up!).

What to Look for in a Lip Stain

Lip stains come in various finishes, from matte to glossy. Matte finishes tend to last longer, while glossy ones may wear off quicker but leave behind a flat wash of colour. Look for formulas containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, plant oils, or shea butter to prevent dryness and keep lips comfortable throughout wear. Waterproof formulas will give the longest-lasting colour pay-off.

How To Apply Your Lip Stain

To get the most out of your lip stain, start by gently exfoliating your lips to create a smooth base for even application. Next, apply a moisturising lip balm and let it absorb for a few minutes before applying the stain. Apply thin layers of the stain, blotting with a tissue between each layer for a more intense, long-lasting colour. Finally, allow the stain to set for at least 30 seconds, depending on the desired intensity.

How Do You Remove Your Lip Stain?

Putting them on is one thing, but taking them off can be quite another challenge! Try using an oil-based makeup remover or cleansing balm to break down the pigments. Gently massage the remover onto the lips with a cotton pad or a cleansing cloth. Use a gentle lip scrub if there is any colour left on. Remember to moisturise your lips after cleansing.
