Top New York Democrat mocked for suggesting secession to Canada if Trump returns: ‘Go ahead and lead the way’

A prominent New York State Democrat stirred controversy when she proposed that the Empire State should consider unconventional options, similar to President-elect Donald Trump’s plans for mass deportations, such as seceding to Canada or challenging the federal government if they attempt to withhold federal funding from the state.

New York State Democratic Sen. Liz Krueger shared with Politico that if Trump proceeds with cutting federal funding from “sanctuary” jurisdictions, Albany could retaliate by withholding some or all of the over $360 billion it sends to the Treasury annually. Krueger emphasized the substantial impact such actions could have, especially considering the federal funds allocated to New York for Medicaid subsidies.

Furthermore, Krueger addressed a previous statement regarding the possibility of New York joining Canada after Trump’s victory. She expressed to City & State NY her openness to New York becoming its own “southern province” alongside Quebec and Ontario.

Meanwhile, a senior official in the New York Republican Party responded to Krueger’s suggestions by urging her to pursue them.

“Liz Krueger is a completely unserious person,” stated David Laska, communications director for the NYSGOP. “She should feel free to lead the way and expatriate: New Yorkers won’t miss her bloviating,” Laska told Fox News Digital.

On X, George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley shared an image of CSA Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendering at Appomattox Court House in Appomattox, Virginia, at the end of the Civil War, referencing Krueger’s unconventional ideas.

“While perhaps tempting for many, State Sen. Liz Krueger is not the first to ‘think outside the box’,” Turley remarked.

“Apparently, when elections don’t go your way, the solution is to plant the Maple Leaf flag in America,” wrote the conservative X aggregator site Twitchy.

“I’ll treat you to a one-way ticket to Montreal on the climate-friendly Amtrak,” wrote political strategist and former New York Post reporter Candice Giove, criticizing Krueger’s proposal to join Canada.

Your elitist proposal to abandon the U.S. and become a Canadian province is an insult to my uncle, who died for our nation. It’ll be the best $122 spent,” Giove said.

Krueger playfully suggested that New York and its neighboring liberal New England states unite and form a new Canadian province in jest, emphasizing her love for the U.S. and acknowledging the significant impact of Trump’s policies on New Yorkers.

She also reportedly received positive feedback from Canadians on the idea but clarified later that it was all meant in jest. Krueger emphasized the seriousness of protecting New Yorkers from potential repercussions of Trump’s decisions.

Tom Homan, Trump’s “border czar”-designate and an upstate New York native, expressed determination to carry out mass deportation proceedings despite opposition, warning of consequences for those who try to obstruct ICE actions.

During the election, Trump vowed to support New York and secured a single precinct victory in Manhattan. Other New York Democrats criticized internal party issues for Vice President Kamala Harris’ loss, suggesting that the “far left” played a role in alienating voters.
