In the aftermath of the devastating 2004 tsunami that ravaged Indonesian provinces Aceh and Nias, UNOPS took action by constructing 225 earthquake-resistant schools in the region. These schools provided children with safe and modern learning environments, revitalizing education for communities that had suffered immense losses. By leveraging engineering knowledge, local labor, and quick implementation, UNOPS made a significant impact on rebuilding the affected areas.
UNOPS also demonstrated its commitment to environmental protection through its involvement in the Montreal Protocol, a global treaty that contributed to the recovery of the ozone layer. Through offering technical guidance and project support, UNOPS assisted countries in transitioning to safer alternatives for nearly 100 chemicals that posed risks to the ozone layer.
