Transforming Travel: The Impact of Airbnb’s Live Music Initiative

When you think of travel, the definition has probably evolved from the typical trip booked with a complimentary breakfast. Now, it’s about the overall experience from the moment you book your trip to when you leave. According to The World Travel & Tourism Council, a study projects a 5.8% annual average growth rate for travel and tourism through 2032, significantly outpacing the overall global economic growth forecast of 2.7%.

With summer in full swing, whether you’re booking spontaneous trips or planning for next year, it’s important to make the most of every trip you have planned. The experience economy is improving how you can maximize your travel experiences, with Airbnb advancing its business model by adding live music experiences.

“More and more guests are choosing Airbnb for big events, including concerts and festivals, because Airbnb can bring you as close to the action as possible,” said Airbnb co-founder and CEO Brian Chesky in a statement. “With our new partnership with Lollapalooza, guests can Airbnb more than an Airbnb—they can unlock once-of-a-lifetime Experiences, rooted in the magic of live music.”

As Millennials and Gen Z’ers get older and plan more trips for memories, the experience has become a key priority, especially during festival season. According to a recent Airbnb survey, over 70% of travelers said they often book an experience when they travel. Now, with Airbnb launching a global live music partnership with Lollapalooza festivals worldwide, the experience economy is now capitalizing on consumers’ need for more than just a trip.

Starting with Lollapalooza in Chicago, Airbnb is bringing a range of activations, including festival photography tutorials, makeup masterclasses, an intimate styling session and learning the art of DJ mixing. “What truly excites me about hosting this summer, especially with the energy of Lollapalooza in the air, is seeing Chicago’s incredible diversity reflected right here in my studio – Black, Latinx, queer, women and so many others, are showing up to learn, mix, and connect,” said host, DJ Lady D. “Airbnb is doing so much more than helping people find a place to stay; they’re giving guests and locals alike a chance to dive into the heart of the city’s culture and connect with others through our music – house music.”

As travelers increasingly book more memorable trips, partnerships like Airbnb’s with Lollapalooza highlight the importance of connecting with local culture and creating unique moments. With the experience economy on the rise, it’s clear that the future of travel lies in the integration of events, creativity and community, allowing travelers to have unique connections with the destinations they visit.

This summer, and in the years to come, embracing the excitement of live music and cultural exchanges will redefine what it means to truly travel.
