President-elect Donald Trump intends to appoint Kash Patel, a close ally and former national security aide known for criticizing the Justice Department and the media, as the new director of the FBI in place of Christopher Wray.

Trump announced on social media that Patel is a “brilliant lawyer, investigator, and ‘America First’ fighter with a history of uncovering corruption, defending justice, and safeguarding the American people.”

Patel gained national recognition as a congressional aide investigating the FBI’s inquiries into Russian interference in the 2016 election, later transitioning to roles in Trump’s National Security Council and Pentagon. He has made appearances on conservative podcasts, where he has made threats to prosecute political opponents. Patel has also pledged to close the FBI headquarters on his first day in office and relocate its employees across the country.

“We’re absolutely serious,” Patel told podcaster Steve Bannon after the November election.

At 44, Patel is a former DOJ prosecutor turned vocal critic of the agency. He authored a book vowing to overhaul the DOJ and FBI by removing senior officials. Additionally, he expressed his desire to declassify government secrets and revoke security clearances from individuals who investigated Trump.

The FBI director traditionally serves a 10-year term to insulate the bureau from political influences. The position requires confirmation by the Senate.

In response to the news, the FBI released a statement emphasizing their dedication to protecting Americans from various threats. Director Wray’s focus remains on the FBI’s personnel and their mission.

Trump appointed Wray in 2017 following the dismissal of Jim Comey. Wray has indicated his intention to complete his term, though his relationship with Trump has been strained.

Toward the end of Trump’s first term, there was an unsuccessful attempt to place Patel in a senior role at the CIA, but this was thwarted by leadership at the agency and the DOJ.
