Trump’s visit to blue-leaning state could help Republicans gain control of Democrat-held Senate seat

The Republican Senate hopeful in New Mexico believes that former President Trump’s visit to the typically Democratic state will bring a surge of energy.

Nella Domenici, the 2024 GOP Senate candidate and daughter of New Mexico’s previous Republican senator, is aiming to unseat Democratic Sen. Martin Heinrich for a third six-year term as her party strives to regain control of the Senate.

“Trump’s presence will certainly appeal to independents,” Domenici stated in an interview with Fox News Digital prior to the former president’s trip to the state.

With just five days until Election Day next Tuesday, Trump is diverting from his focus on key battleground states to make a stop in New Mexico, a move that could influence the outcome of the 2024 election.

It has been twenty years since a Republican won in New Mexico during a presidential election.

While there is limited polling data for New Mexico, recent surveys show Harris with a slight lead over Trump, with one survey suggesting a closer race for the state’s electoral votes.

New Mexico Democrats believe Trump’s visit – his first in five years – is unnecessary, dismissing it as a futile endeavor.

“Trump’s visit to our state is a waste of time given that New Mexicans are poised to reject his extreme views and divisive rhetoric once more,” stated Democratic Party of New Mexico spokesperson Daniel Garcia.

Commenting on Trump’s appearance in Albuquerque on Halloween, Garcia took a swipe at the former president, remarking, “a rotund orange mass will be in Albuquerque on Halloween, and we’re not talking about a pumpkin.”

However, Domenici views Trump’s visit as advantageous for her efforts to compete with Heinrich.

“The excitement surrounding Trump’s visit is palpable,” she shared with Fox News. “It’s energizing our base and drawing new support to the Republican Party.”

Domenici believes that discontent with Democratic governance in New Mexico is prompting residents to consider supporting the Republican ticket.

“Many Hispanic Democrats are transitioning to our side out of frustration with high living costs and rising crime rates. Momentum is building towards Republican support,” Domenici claimed.
