United Nations officials have denounced the proposal of deporting individuals from Gaza, citing its clear prohibition under international law, following President Donald Trump’s announcement that the US will take control of the Palestinian territory and relocate its war-weary population.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to caution against “ethnic cleansing” of approximately 2.3 million people in Gaza on Wednesday, as stated by his spokesperson.
Guterres’s spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, informed reporters, “The secretary-general will emphasize the importance of adhering to international law and avoiding any form of ethnic cleansing. He will also reaffirm the two-state solution.”
UN human rights chief Volker Turk strongly opposed Trump’s remarks, which have sparked global outrage, stating, “Any forcible transfer or deportation of individuals from occupied territory is strictly prohibited.”
During a news conference in Washington, DC, Trump declared his plan to “take over” Gaza and transform it into the “Riviera of the Middle East,” proposing the relocation of Gaza’s population to other countries. This suggestion has been rejected by various nations and leaders.
‘Riviera of the Middle East’
Trump’s announcement elicited shock and disapproval from many, with neighboring countries rejecting the idea of mass transfers of Palestinians from Gaza. The region has witnessed significant casualties in a prolonged conflict between Hamas and Israel.
Turk emphasized the importance of focusing on reaching a resolution for the ongoing ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, rather than Trump’s proposals. The international community seeks a comprehensive end to the conflict and the reconstruction of Gaza.
‘An international crime’
UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese criticized Trump’s plan as “unlawful, immoral, and irresponsible,” labeling it as an incitement to forced displacement, which is considered an international crime.
Albanese highlighted that international law prohibits the seizure of a sovereign territory without the consent of the controlling government, emphasizing the illegality of Israel handing over control of Gaza to a foreign entity.
She warned of exacerbating the regional crisis if Trump proceeds with the plan and called on world leaders to take a firm stance against such actions.
