No matter where you stand on Paramount+’s inaugural direct-to-streaming “Star Trek” film, “Section 31,” we can all probably agree (hopefully) that the surprise cameo at the film’s end was quite entertaining and sets the stage for a potential sequel.
Spoilers alert: If you haven’t seen the movie yet, refer to our How to watch Star Trek: Section 31 guide for more information.
The particular scene occurs at the finale when Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) and her team of black ops agents complete their mission to save the United Federation of Planets from The Godsend, a doomsday bomb. They reconvene at Georgiou’s space station nightclub/casino, The Baraam, outside Federation space to celebrate their success in preventing the imminent disaster.
A holographic transmission arrives from the Section 31 director, revealing their next perilous mission and destination. This character, Control, is portrayed by Michelle Yeoh’s colleague Jamie Lee Curtis from “Everything, Everywhere, All At Once!”
She appears as a violet-skinned cyborg, recognized as the voice that alerted the Alpha Team Leader at the film’s outset after the startling flashback depicting Georgiou’s rise to Terran Emperor.
Control informs the team, comprising Alok (Omari Hardwick), Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), Quasi (Sam Richardson), and Fuzz’s spouse Wisp (Sven Ruygrok), that their commando group will continue operating and asks, “Has anybody been to Turkana IV?” This reference is a nod to the planet Lt. Tasha Yar and her sister Ishara Yar were from in “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”
Director Olatunde Osunsanmi told EW how Michelle Yeoh facilitated Curtis’ introduction to the “Star Trek” universe for the first time.
“As producers, we deliberated on who should play this role,” he informed EW. “After considering a few names, we settled on Jamie Lee Curtis. Michelle knows Jamie Lee Curtis and was able to recommend her. Furthermore, it turned out that Alex Kurtzman’s cousin, a top ‘Star Trek’ producer, also represents Jamie Lee Curtis. So we had two ways to communicate with her, making the process quite smooth.”
Will Curtis return for a “Star Trek: Section 31” sequel series or another streaming film? While it’s more probable this was a singular project due to the mixed reviews, anything is possible!
“Star Trek: Section 31” is currently streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
