United Airlines recently announced a partnership with Starlink to provide in-flight internet access for passengers. Originally planned for early 2024, testing will now begin next month, with the first passenger flight featuring Starlink scheduled for this spring on an Embraer E-175 regional jet.
United’s Chief Customer Officer, Linda Jojo, explained that the installation of the new Starlink terminal on aircraft will take about two days, with the option to split the install over two nights during base maintenance.
By the end of the year, Starlink is expected to be installed on United’s entire regional fleet, with mainline aircraft to follow before the end of the year. This upgrade will provide ample bandwidth for passengers to stream live video, use productivity apps, and play games.
Richard Nunn, CEO of United’s MileagePlus frequent flyer program, emphasized the impact of Starlink on the flying experience and the benefits for MileagePlus members. Wi-Fi over Starlink will be complimentary for MileagePlus members, allowing multiple devices to connect under a single account.
