Adam Abdelmoula stated in a statement issued by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, known as OCHA, that “The UN is strategically reducing its footprint by relocating non-critical staff outside the country… amid the evolving circumstances.”
He also emphasized that this action does not constitute an evacuation and reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering dedication to supporting the people of Syria, dispelling rumors of a full staff evacuation.
Mr. Abdelmoula reiterated the UN’s commitment to providing life-saving aid to the people of Syria during this critical time.
Dire humanitarian situation
Recent days have seen over 300,000 people displaced in northwest Syria due to an offensive by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), labeled a terrorist group by the UN Security Council.
The UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator highlighted the deteriorating humanitarian conditions, with many displaced seeking refuge in the northeast and others trapped in front-line areas.
He urged all parties to protect civilians and humanitarian workers and to uphold their obligations under international laws.
Despite the challenges, the UN continues its operations in Syria, ensuring the continuation of essential humanitarian efforts.
Mr. Abdelmoula reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to providing food, water, and medical assistance to those in need, wherever they may be.
Call for urgent political talks
UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, called for urgent political talks in Geneva to facilitate an orderly political transition.
He urged de-escalation, calm, and the protection of civilians in accordance with international laws.
Mr. Pedersen emphasized the need for political discussions in Geneva to implement Security Council resolution 2254, aimed at achieving peace in Syria through a Syrian-led political process.
He received support for this call from various countries, expressing hope to announce a date for these talks soon.
