USA Gymnastics fought hard to retain Jordan Chiles’ bronze medal in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics.
The American gymnastics federation stated that new video evidence proved an inquiry was made to the judges within the required International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) deadline, resulting in a 0.1 point score change for Chiles.

As a result of the score change, Chiles moved from fifth place to third, displacing Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu. The Romanian Gymnastics Federation contested this decision, leading to a ruling by the Center of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) that the U.S. inquiry was late, reverting Chiles’ score to 13.666.
Earlier on Sunday, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called for Chiles to return her medal.
“USA Gymnastics submitted evidence to CAS showing that Head Coach Cecile Landi’s request for an inquiry was made 47 seconds after the score was published, within the required 1-minute deadline by FIG rules,” the organization explained.
USA Gymnastics requested CAS reinstate Chiles’ score of 13.766 for the bronze medal.

“The CAS ruling stated that the inquiry made on behalf of Jordan Chiles for the women’s floor exercise final was after the one-minute deadline specified by article 8.5 of the 2024 FIG Technical Regulations and is considered invalid,” the organization stated.
“The video evidence provided by USA Gymnastics on Sunday evening clearly shows that Landi requested an inquiry 47 seconds after the score was posted, followed by a second request 55 seconds after the original posting.”
USA Gymnastics mentioned that the video evidence was not available before the CAS ruling and could not be presented at that time.
The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) announced its intention to appeal the CAS decision earlier on Sunday.

“We strongly believe that Jordan rightfully earned the bronze medal, and there were significant errors in both the initial scoring by the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the subsequent CAS appeal process that need to be addressed,” the USOPC stated.
